Midwest City founder W.P. "Bill" Atkinson (1907-1999) lived and loved history.
Atkinson's home, located at 1001 N. Midwest Blvd., is presented
as it was when built in 1955. Now called Atkinson Heritage
Center, the home and grounds are available for tours.
In addition to all the history of the home and the history
collected by Atkinson, there is a special room housing all
of the bound volumes of the Oklahoma Journal, which Atkinson
published from 1963-1979. A part of this Center was the
"Airplane" Room of his home that was dedicated to recording
history of Tinker Air Force Base, local, regional and state
political leaders and local education. A Pony Barn, built
especially for Atkinson's Shetland ponies, eventually became
a museum for local history.
To preserve the area's past, Atkinson developed the Living
Historical Center of Central Oklahoma Trust. The Living
Historical Center of Central Oklahoma Trust was donated
to the Rose State College Foundation for use by the College
as a center to continue the preservation of the area for
the wider community's use.
The estate is the physical location for the Eastern Oklahoma
County Regional History Center (EOCRHC), which was established
several years ago at Rose State College.
The Atkinson Heritage Center is available for tours by
appointment by calling (405) 732-5832
