COURSE DESCRIPTION
Art 2813 is a study of the arts, artists and their cultures from Prehistoric man through the Renaissance. Art History Survey I fulfills three hours of Humanities credit that is required for graduation from Rose State College. It is required for Art majors and open to any interested student.
OBJECTIVES
- Recognize and identify by name, art and style the major art works of the period being studied.
- List and define important terms describing techniques, etc. of each period.
- Analyze and describe the development of the styles of each art period.
- Compare works of major artists within a given period.
- Compare styles within or between major period.
- Evaluate the contributions of the artists to their own time periods or to the development of art in general.
TEXTBOOK
Marilyn Stokstad's History of Art, 2nd Edition (this book is used in both Art History Survey I and II classes). Yes, it is the BIG one! (Don't confuse it with the text for Art 1103, also by Stokstad but thinner.) It is available in the College Bookstore located in the Student Center.
ASSESSMENT
- Three tests of equal importance (Essays, slide identification and glossary terms) equal 3 letter grades. The essays are "take-home" with the slide identification and glossary exams being conducted in class. The essays are to be typed and submitted in a paper pocket folder on the day of the slide identification portion of the test.
- Students will keep a Personal Journal. Items will be assigned during the semester. These will include 3 museum visitations (discuss two works of art at each museum/gallery), create a homepage and participate in discussion topics presented at Blackboard.com, and critiques or short essays on videos, magazine articles, WWW resources, or personal comments on art. You will be given an e-mail address at Rose State College that can be used to logon to computers on campus, as well as instructions on how to set up an account with Hotmail, Yahoo or Netscape (free e-mail providers for mail going outside RSC). The journal grade will equal one letter grade.
- Extra credit or bonus points could be earned by writing a research paper of participating in additional online discussions via e-mail. If electing to write a paper, it should be approximately 5 typewritten, double-spaced pages with 3 references requied. You will need to contact me for a topic.
- Attendance is essential to passing this course. Every fourth absence will cause your grade to be lowered by one letter grade!
- When you receive a letter grade for your Test or Journal/Museum items, the tabulation is as follows: A+ 12 points, A 11 points, A- 10 points, B+ 9 points, B 8 points, B- 7 points, C+ 6 points, C 5 points, C- 4 points, D+ 3 points, D 2 points, D- 1 point.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
An interactive CD-ROM Slide Review will be checked out to you the first week of classes. You will be instructed on how to use the Review on either a home computer, or computers available in labs at Rose State College. Your grade will be recorded as an Incomplete, if this disk is not turned in on the day you take the last test, and will remain so until turned in! Any Journals assigned will have a specific time frame to be completed or additional points will be deducted. To access your thumbnails on the TEST INFORMATION page, your Username is art2812 (no caps or spaces) and the Password is necia (all lower case). Then click on the Login button.
I will try and work in a field trip to two museums in Dallas, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma. We will use transportation furnished by the college. The only charge for my students would be a museum fee if there is a "traveling exhibit." Ordinarily, these museums do not charge admission. The two museums Dallas are the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Meadows Museum, and in Tulsa are the Philbrook Museum and Gilcrease Museum. Watch our Survey I Index page for updated information.
