Binary Acid Compounds

   The small binary hydrogen containing compounds are gases, but are usually encountered as water solutions.  Thus the compounds which are considered to be a binary acid have both a hydrogen first in the formula and are represented as being in water solution.

        HX(aq)

The format for the name of this kind of compound is two words:

    First word:  a prefix hydro connected to the stem of X with an ic suffix

   and followed by the word acid.  Hydro comes from the compound being in a water solution

        HBr(aq)

    hydrobromic acid
