HIM Coding Specialist

Overview

Applications can be hand delivered to the Health Science Center, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. or mailed to Julie Hoisington, Health Information Management Program, Rose State College, 6420 SE 15th Street, Midwest City, OK  73110.

The program begins the Fall semester of each year. Upon admission into the program, the course of study is one year in length. HIM CODING SPECIALIST (HSHI) courses must be taken in consecutive order.

Class Size

15 students are selected each year.

Program Hours

The professional courses for CODING SPECIALIST students are offered only during the day with general education coursework offered daytime or evening. Enrolling in a full-time schedule will require approximately 36 hours per week. If general education and basic health science courses have been completed, the health information classes will require approximately 15-25 hours per week.

Program Length

The program begins in late August of each year. Upon admission into the program, the course of study is one year in length. CODING SPECIALIST (HSHI) courses must be taken in consecutive order. If the application period for the program has passed, students may take the courses listed in part II, below, until the next application and selection period. Also, see part III, section A, number 1.

Pertinent Information

1. The application period extends from February 1st through April 15th of each year.

2. Curriculum and Certification: Completion of the Health Information Management CODING SPECIALIST certificate curriculum at Rose State College results in a Certificate by the college. The curriculum is designed for those who have been or are working in the medical environment who wish to learn coding and/or those with some basic coding knowledge who wish to become proficient coders in both ICD-10-CM and CPT to prepare to take the CCS or CCA examination by AHIMA. Only those passing the AHIMA Coding Specialist Certification Exam may utilize the credential designations of CCS or CCA (Certified Coding Specialist or Certified Coding Associate).

Career Options

All courses of the Coding Specialist Certificate program that are successfully completed with a grade of C or higher will transfer to the two-year Health Information Management Program.
