Learning Resources Center

The Learning Resources Center at Rose State College provides traditional library services as well as academic testing services, overhead transparency production, classroom equipment circulation, audiotape duplication, instructional design assistance, tutoring services, closed-circuit TV broadcasting to the classroom, an open computer lab, and distance learning support.

The Learning Resources Center has a collection of over 100,000 print and audiovisual items and 25,000+ electronic books. The well-rounded reference library covers traditional subject areas as well as such specialties as law. A periodical collection of over 400 titles is available along with several full-text databases. Orientations to LRC services are provided upon request.

Library Card

Your Rose State College photo ID is your library card. Please bring your photo ID with you. You will need to show it to check out materials or use LRC computers in the Second Floor AV computer lab. For more information see the Circulation Services Web Site.

To Check Out Circulating Books

Take your selection and your RSC photo ID to the Circulation Desk on the second floor of the LRC. Items check out for 21 days. Faculty may request an extended check out period if the materials are needed for a longer time. For more information see the Circulation Services Web Site.

To Check Out Reference Books and Magazines

Take your selections and your RSC photo ID to the Reference Desk on the first floor of the LRC. Sign for the materials for a three-day check out. Certain highly utilized materials may not be circulated. For more information see the Reference Services Web Site.

To Check Out Audiovisual Software and Hardware

Audiovisual software may be checked out at the Audiovisual Services desk for one week. Audiovisual equipment (including laptops, digital cameras, and projectors) may also be checked out for one week. Reservations must be made at least one day in advance. Equipment will not be delivered to the classroom because of the high risk of theft. Equipment operators are not provided by the LRC, but Audiovisual staff will familiarize professors with the operation of all equipment. Laminating may be left in Audiovisual Services. Please give at least 24 hrs. for completion. Small orders are sometimes saved until there are enough requests. Please be sure to attach your name and phone number. Please be aware that lamination film will not adhere to some paper surfaces.

Class Orientations and Information Literacy Sessions

Call the Reference Librarian at 733-7543 to request library information literacy sessions for your classes. The LRC offers beginning and advanced orientations as well as special orientations tailored to the needs of a particular class. Please give the staff at least 24 hours notice and accompany your students when they come for an orientation. Orientations are held generally in LRC204D but may be scheduled in LRC110, if necessary.

If you wish to bring your class to the LRC for another reason, please call in advance. Even though you may not need the services of a librarian, it is important that visits are coordinated in a way that prevents competition for space and materials. Reserve Items

Bring items you wish to place on reserve (your personal materials or materials the LRC owns) to the Circulation Desk on the second floor at least 24 hours before you plan to have your students use them. Fill out a reserve form. A copy is attached.

Faculty Information about Reserves

Reserve Form 

Tell your students that the item is on reserve under your name, and that they should inquire at the Circulation Desk on the second floor of the LRC. Also, tell them how long the item may be checked out. LRC-owned textbooks are kept on reserve while current. All reserve materials will be returned to faculty or the LRC shelves at the end of the school year. For more information see the Circulation Services Web Site.

Ordering Materials for the LRC

Pick up an order form from your Division Dean or call 736-0259. Complete the form and attach a review, if possible. Return the form, with review, to your Dean. LRC ordering procedures are described in detail below.

Closed-Circuit Television

Call Audiovisual Services at 733-7544 to have video programs shown in the classroom over the closed-circuit TV system. Faculty calling before 2:00pm may schedule broadcasts anytime after 4:00pm the same day. If a call is received after 2:00pm, a broadcast cannot be scheduled until after 4:00pm on the following day. To schedule for Monday, the request must be received before 2:00pm on Friday. Go to Audiovisual Services on the second floor to view videos in the LRC. Interlibrary Loan

The library has access to many other sources of information that are not owned by the LRC. If the LRC does not have a particular item, it may be borrowed from another library through our national computer connection. Faculty copies of microfilm are at no charge, for course-related copying.


OK-Share is a cooperative program among libraries at Oklahoma’s public and private colleges and universities that allows higher education students, faculty, and staff from member libraries to borrow library materials from any other OK-Share library. Faculty OK-Share cards are valid for the academic year. For details see

Syllabus Information

Please consider including the Learning Resources Center in your syllabus. Help us to promote our services, and help your students find reliable sources for their assignments. Suggested text about the LRC:


The Learning Resources Center is the best place to start your research. They have online databases and other great resources that give you broader and better results than by just Google-ing your topic. Go to to get started. The databases can be used in the LRC or from your home computer. (You will need to log-in on campus first, just once.) For assistance, call the Reference Desk at 733-7543. LRC hours for Fall and Spring Semesters are Mon-Thurs 7:30 am to 10 pm; Friday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm; Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; Sunday 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm. (Times may vary for holidays & between semesters.)

If you have specific sources for the students to choose, please send us a list ahead of time for us to attempt to add them for the students OR consider making your list from materials we do have.

Student Reading Lists

The LRC staff will be happy to assist you in your preparation of student reading lists by adding call numbers and locations. Call the Dean, LRC, at 736-0259 for assistance.

If you have specific sources for the students to choose, please send us the list ahead of time for us to attempt to add them for the students (or consider making your list from the items we do have).


The LRC provides the equipment and material for making transparencies. Professors may make transparencies in the Audiovisual Services area. To print a transparency, a carbon-based master is necessary. An original should be duplicated (Xeroxed) before it is brought to the LRC.

The Instructional Support Center (LRC206) is equipped with CD writer, scanner, and videocaption capabilities. Instructional design and technology support  is available should faculty need assistance with the equipment.

Conference Rooms

The LRC has a conference room (12-seat table) and a few small rooms which may be used for small group conferences. The conference room, seating 12 (LRC116)  may be scheduled by calling 736-0261 (ext. 6261). Smaller rooms are available on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Student Computer Lab

Computers and printers are available for use in the LRC Audiovisual Services, 2nd Floor (turn left immediately after entering the Library on the second floor). Bring your Rose State College photo ID and a 3.5 disk, CD-R, or USB flash drive to save your work. Paper (8.5" x 11") is furnished. The AV computer lab closes 30 minutes before the LRC. Notification of Periodical Contents

Faculty and administrative and professional staff may choose to receive photocopies of the contents pages of up to five periodicals. The contents pages are photocopied by library staff shortly after they are received, and the copies are distributed by campus mail. The library can supply lists of periodicals from which to choose. Call 733-7403. This service provides the table of contents only. Due to copyright restrictions, individuals are responsible for making copies of any library material they need.

Academic Testing Services

The Academic Testing Center administers make-up tests, advanced-standing tests, the Computer Proficiency Exam, and tests for self-paced, correspondence, Internet, and telecourses.  Bookmarks and brochures listing hours and describing procedures are available at Academic Testing.  For more information see the Academic Testing Services Web Site or call 733-7440.

Internet Access

Computers in Audiovisual Services (requires network log-on) and Reference Services (Priority is given to research needs.) provide access to the Internet. Bring your Rose State College photo ID and a disk, if you wish to download information. Paper is furnished. The AV computer lab closes 30 minutes before the rest of the LRC.

Instructional Support Center/Desire2Learn

This office provides instructional design and technology support for faculty. Support services include curriculum, instructional, and assessment strategies, PowerPoint and multimedia development, faculty web page development, and use of Desire 2 Learn (D2L) learning management system. The office has available hardware and software to support a wide variety of faculty instructional needs. There are two audio rooms faculty can use for recording/developing class material. Online, blended, and Web-Enhanced Courses -- Rose State College currently uses Desire2Learn (D2L) for its online learning management system. Any faculty member may use the learning management system in any course whether it is designated as online or not. Please see the for information.

Concurrent Program

The Concurrent Program helps high school students meet high school requirements, and successful completion of college course work demonstrates that students are capable of the academic rigor college demands.

Distance Education/Academic Outreach

The Distance Education Office coordinates and facilitates delivery of courses outside the traditional service area.

Telecourses and interactive television (ITV) Courses – Rose State College delivers several telecourses through the local cable TV company. We currently broadcast on Cox Digital Cable channel 125. Rose State telecourses on tape serve incarcerated students at several state institutions. In addition, the college delivers interactive television courses to several area high schools, state correctional facilities, and hospitals as well as the campus cable network. Tutoring Services

Free tutoring services are available to RSC students for general education classes. Area high school students are also eligible for the service. To schedule a tutoring session, students should call 733-7417. For more information see the Tutoring Services Web Site.

Online tutoring Center is available through the LRC's homepage. Select "Online Tutoring" or look under Tutoring Services on the LRC web page. Online tutoring is free, 24/7 for general education classes. Tutoring in Spanish for general education classes is available from 2:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Electronic Reference Services

The LRC online databases are now available on- and off-campus. See the Log-in instructions. When logging into the databases from off-campus, faculty and staff members enter rsc\username (network log-in). All users will enter their network passwords.

E-mail reference questions -- You may contact the reference desk via e-mail for reference information. The e-mail address is

Ask-A-Librarian is 24/7. You and your students may confer with a librarian who can assist with general reference and library questions and such questions as how to log-in to the databases, how to get a student id, how to select a database.

Online databases--The LRC has a variety of popular online databases. Check the page linked below for the latest databases. The following databases are available through the LRC's online databases web page. 

A-to-Z Ejournal/Journal List is a list of all the periodicals available in full-text and in print on the LRC shelves or through online databases.

Books In Print lists books available from publishers, with some reviews.

Careers-Internet is a set of online pamphlets describing different careers.

CollegeSource has the full-text of college catalogs from around the country. Adobe Acrobat software is required to view the catalogs. 

CountryWatch has general information about countries as well as travel advisories.

The CQ Researcher is a magazine on current events and available online. A great place to find essay and speech topics.

DynaMed is an evidence-based medical treatment guide from EBSCO.

E-books are now available through EBSCOhost. Select All databases or check our online catalog.

EBSCOhost provides access to a large variety of databases--general, academic, business, health (including DynaMed), and for children. More than 6,000 periodicals are available in full-text format.

Encyclopedia Britannica and Facts on File are great full-text sources for quick information.

Facts on File is a great source for fast facts or news from 1940 to the present. Great section on debate topics and controversial issues.

15th Street News index is now available online, as are the indexes for Pegasus and Logos.

Gale Literary Index indexes Gale reference books.

Hoover's is a business database. 

InfoTrac has a literary database. 

Job/Career Accelerator assists those looking to select careers, find a job, or interview for a position.

Learning Express provides sample tests for such exams as ASVAB, GED, and ACT.

Marquis Who's Who on the Web provides short biographical information of living people from various fields (1607-present).

Mergent Online provides information on open-stock companies.

netLibrary has moved to EBSCOhost. See E-books above.

Newsbank (full-text newspaper articles) includes the Daily Oklahoman, Tulsa World and other national newspapers. 

Oxford English Dictionary has all 22-volumes and updates of this class set.

ProQuest includes Ethnic NewsWatch (a full-text collection of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native presses in Spanish and English) and Historical NY Times (full-text images, 1851-2006).

PubMed is an index which covers the fields of medicine, dental, nursing, veterinary medicine, healthcare systems, and preclinical sciences.

Science Full Text Select provides articles from scientific, technical, agricultural and applied mathematical journals.

SIRS Knowledge Source provides general full-text articles on social issues, government information, and a humanities database. 

WestLaw provides laws, court cases and other legal information.

WorldCat includes over 49 million records of materials in libraries. The database is used for interlibrary loan. Many selected Internet sources are also included in WorldCat.

First Floor

1. Academic Testing Services administers make-up tests, advanced standing tests, the computer proficiency exam, and tests for self-paced, correspondence, Internet and telecourse classes. 

2. Tutoring Services provides free tutoring to RSC and high school students (grades 9–12) in General Education classes. Free online tutoring is available to RSC students for English, math, and science 24/7. Online tutoring for general education classes in Spanish is available 2-9 p.m.

3. The Copier may be used to photocopy materials for $.10 per copy.

4. RSC Special Collections include some of the College’s official and historic documents, some publications by Rose State faculty and staff, and all issues of Pegasus. All 15th Street News are now in the collection and are indexed in an online database. Pegasus and Logos are also indexed.

5. The Reference Collection contains resource books (dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc.) that may be checked out by faculty for a short period, photocopied or used in the LRC.

6. The Reference Librarian will help you find the information and materials that you need. This is the place to ask questions about using the LRC.

7. Electronic Databases provide access to periodical and newspaper articles and other full-text information sources.  Ask the Reference Librarian for a demonstration. Microsoft Office applications are now available on Reference computers, as well.

The Library Catalog shows what materials the LRC has by author, title, subject and call number. The Reference Librarian will be glad to help you use the catalog.

8. Annual Reports of Businesses are filed along the east wall of the Reference area.

9. Study Rooms are available for group study on a first-come, first-served basis.

10. The Vertical File, located along the east wall, contains pamphlets, etc. in call number order, roughly by subject.

11. Microfilm of back issues of newspapers is shelved in metal filing cabinets located along the east wall of the Reference Department.

12. The Copy Shop Copy Shop staff will assist library users with microfilm and copying at 10 cents per page. Four microfilm readers are available near the Copy Shop.

13. Magazines and Journals are shelved at the south end of the Reference Department. They are arranged alphabetically by title. Both the current paper copies and the back issues on microfilm are shelved in the same location. Current newspapers are shelved at the end of the magazine collection. They are arranged alphabetically by title. The most recent issue of the Daily Oklahoman is available in the Copy Shop.

14. The Print Indexes to Periodicals and Newspapers on the index tables will help you locate specific articles by subject. 

15. Disability Services Coordinator/Counselor is in room LRC125. Students and faculty may contact Janet Griffith at 733-7407.

Second Floor

1. Audiovisual Services has music CDs, videorecordings, DVD players, Blu-Ray players, video cameras, scanners, and other media. These materials may be checked out only by faculty and staff. Audiovisual items may be located by using the online public access catalog.

Laptop computers and computer programs are available to faculty for checkout at the Audiovisual Services desk.

2. Student Computer Laboratory has computers and printers available for use. Some computer programs are also available. Students need a network logon to utilize the computers. Bring your Rose State College photo ID and a 3.5 disk, CD-R, and USB key chain drives are also acceptable.

This is an open lab. The computers will not be reserved for groups.

3. The Copier may be used to photocopy materials for $.10 per copy per 8.5" x 11" copy.

4. Circulation Desk is where printed materials are to be checked out. Bring your RSC photo ID to use as your library card. The checkout period for most materials is 21 days.

5. The Reserve Materials are located behind the Circulation Desk. These items may be used for only a short period of time, and generally only in the LRC. Some textbooks are available for use in the LRC.  Students must know the name of the book needed.

6. The Library Catalog shows what materials the LRC has by author, title, subject and call number. The Reference Librarian on the first floor will be glad to help you use the catalog.

7. The Circulating Book Collection includes all of the books that may be checked out. These books are arranged by Library of Congress call numbers. The Reference Librarians will be glad to explain the arrangement if assistance is needed.

8. Distance Education (LRC208) Jan Bugby schedules and coordinates telecourses, ITV courses or scheduling of ITV rooms. Call Jan at 733-7951 or contact by e-mail. Terrance Grayson schedules and coordinates on-site concurrent courses at area high schools. He also advises and enrolls concurrent students. Call Terrance at 736-0350 or contact by e-mail.

9. Instructional Support Center (LRC206) is a quiet work environment equipped with modern computers where faculty may work. The lab contains several high-end computers each with media card readers, DVD burners, and installed software that will allow faculty members to develop instructional materials. The lab contains a scanner and a 7-bay CD duplicator, as well. There are two audio rooms faculty can use for recording/developing class material.  Chris Meyer and Dana Lindon-Burgett provide technical assistance concerning online, blended, or web-enhanced courses and instructional design issues. 10. Training Computer Lab (LRC204) is primarily for class orientations/information literacy sessions conducted by LRC staff and for faculty training. If the lab is unscheduled (not more than 24 hours in advance), faculty members may utilize it. Call 733-7543 for scheduling.

Guidelines for Equipment Check Out at Audiovisual Services

Call ext. 7544 (733-7544), if you have any questions about AV.

Equipment Picked Up by Professor:

  1. We do not guarantee to have the equipment if advance notice is not given. You may check on equipment availability in the Library Catalog.
  2. The professor must give the building name and room number where equipment will be used.
  3. Equipment must not be taken from the campus unless authorized at the time of check out.
  4. All AV items circulate for one week.

Other Guidelines:

  1. Professors should not loan equipment to another professor without notifying the LRC.
  2. Students cannot check equipment out of the LRC. Professors must check-out equipment for students and be the responsible party.
  3. Please let the AV staff know if you are going to need the equipment for longer than one week before pick-up.
  4. To prevent loss or theft, all equipment must be checked out in the AV Department. Equipment must be supervised or under lock and key.

Ordering Procedures

The Rose State College LRC welcomes recommendations for purchase. Procedures for requesting materials are outlined below. If you have questions, please contact Sharon Saulmon, Dean, Learning Resources Center, at ext. 6259 (405-736-0259).


Step 1 - Fill out an order request form, supplying as much information as possible. See example below. The more information you provide, the more accurate and timely the order. Feel free to attach flyers, brochures, etc. pertaining to the requested material. Flyers and brochures will not be returned unless specified. Order forms can be obtained by calling Carolyn Hust, 736-0204  (ext.6204).

Step 2 - Have your division Dean sign or initial your request.

Step 3 - Forward your request to the Dean, LRC, LRC118.

EXAMPLE OF A REQUEST FORM (Please print or type requests)

  1. ISBN: International Standard Book Number. (Always a 10- or 13-digit number)
  2. Title: Title and subtitle of book
  3. Author: Author's complete name--last name first.
  4. Publ. Date Date of publication.
  5. Price: Price per copy
  6. Vol.: Volume number, if the work consists of more than one volume.
  7. Edition: Edition. other than the first, or format--audiovisual, software, etc.
  8. Copies Number of copies (Assumed to be a single copy unless otherwise designated.)
  9. Publ: Name of the publisher
  10. Requested by: Name of the requestor, plus division and office room number.
  11. Division Approval Signature or initials of division head.
  12. Notes: Any helpful notes for locating material. (address, phone number, citations, etc.)
  13. LRC USE ONLY: Library use only.


Step 1 - After requests are approved by the Dean, Learning Resources Center, orders are sent to various vendors, jobbers, or directly to the publishing company. Purchase requests that are denied by the Dean, Learning Resources Center, will be returned to the requestor with an explanation for the denial. The Dean, Learning Resources Center, welcomes any discussion about denied requests.

Step 2 - After the requested item has arrived and has been processed through the Technical Services Department, the original request form is sent to the requestor stating the item is now available in the library. The call number of the item is included at the bottom of the request.


Rush requests should be marked "RUSH" and called to the attention of the Dean, Learning Resources Center, so it can be given priority. Please do not request rush handling unless it is necessary. Rush requests are costly and delay the acquisition of other materials.
