Music (Liberal Studies)

Liberal Studies, Music Option

The goal of the Music option of the Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Studies is to provide a comprehensive two-professor and studentyear program that prepares the student to transfer to a baccalaureate-granting institution.

Classes are small and faculty will nurture development of musicianship in order for all students to reach their potential. Private lessons are offered in piano, voice, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. There are also opportunities for students to perform as part of various ensembles.  Foundation courses in theory and harmony are required.

Specific program objectives include:

  • A solid foundation in the beginning four semesters of music harmony and aural theory necessary to transfer successfully to a baccalaureate degree granting institution.
  • Applied course work in primary and secondary performing areas and in the history and literature of music.
  • A basic general education foundation of English, history, government, science, math, and liberal arts appropriate for students transferring to a four-year institution.

music studentsStudents in the program must complete courses listed in the Program Requirements section with a minimum grade of "C" in each course in order to receive the Associate in Arts degree.  Students should consult the four-year institution to which they are planning to transfer and carefully select courses that will meet requirements for the baccalaureate degree program.  Program requirements (PDF)
