Alexis Harris Honored As 2018 Newman Civic Fellow Published March 16, 2018

Alexis Sanders in front of a computerAlexis Harris took an unconventional path to Rose State College. After graduating from Midwest City High School in 2013, Harris didn’t immediately enroll at Rose State College. Once on campus however, her personality, kind-heart, determination, and drive to serve her fellow students caused her to stand out. Her selfless attitude and infectious smile soon earned her a spot in the President’s Leadership Program, a college scholarship, and now recognition as a Newman Civic Fellow for 2018.

Alexis Harris, a second-year mass communication student, plans to transfer to the University of Central Oklahoma upon graduation, where she hopes to one day be a sports photographer. After high school, Harris decided to enroll at the Oklahoma Photography School, before enrolling at Rose. This year, according to Harris, allowed her to mature a bit.

Once on campus, Harris’ commitment to serve others and the school eventually earned her a scholarship, and a spot in the President’s Leadership Program. Harris routinely volunteered at various events on campus during her first year, something that stood out to RSC Student Life leadership, and eventually President Jeanne Webb.

“[She] is a student leader who is passionate about supporting youth in her community,” said Webb in her nomination letter for Harris. “She has worked tirelessly on our campus and in our area to contribute to issues directly related to poverty and empowerment of others.”

During Harris’ time at Rose, she’s looked for any and every opportunity to serve. Harris has volunteered her photography skills with programs such as Rumble in to Reading, helped organize a prom dress giveaway for local high school students, and started a Rose State chapter of “Women of Purpose,” a student organization focused on serving students.

Alexis has also utilized her time at Rose to develop her talents, volunteering as a photographer with the 15th St. News, the Rose State College campus newspaper, as well as cultivating her love of sports through an internship with Kelly Sports, a regional sports properties company.

“Through her time at Rose State College, Alexis has moved from a shy student, to a strong force on the campus. She is respected by peers, faculty and staff alike,” stated Webb. “She will represent the Newman Civic Fellowship with fierce determination and strong passion.”

The Newman Civic Fellowship is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
