Lifeguard Certifications

LIFEGUARD PREREQUISITE COURSE - $25

The purpose of the lifeguard prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is designed to assess the individual’s strength, endurance and comfort in the water. Entry into the Red Cross Lifeguarding course is strictly limited to those who meet the minimum age requirement and have successfully completed the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. Time: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Candidates must:

  1. Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the lifeguard course.
  2. Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  3. Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  4. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Note- Students must enroll in a Lifeguarding Prerequisite course and successfully pass the Prerequisite skills before the first day of the Lifeguarding review course they attend. 

LIFEGUARD REVIEW COURSE - $70

The purpose of a review course is to give individuals the opportunity to review the course content within a formal course setting. The review course format optimizes a participant’s ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skills evaluations. The responsibility for preparing for the final written exam is shared by the instructor and the participant.

Note- Students must enroll in a Lifeguarding Prerequisite course and successfully pass the Prerequisite skills before the first day of the Lifeguarding review course they attend.  

** Students must be currently certified in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED in order to participate in a review course. Students will need to bring a current copy of their certifications on the first day of class.

LIFEGUARD COURSE - $135

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This program offers a choice of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience.

Note- Students must enroll in a Lifeguarding Prerequisite course and successfully pass the Prerequisite skills before the first day of the Lifeguarding course they attend.

** To participate in any Red Cross Lifeguarding course you must be at least 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course.

 

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI) - $175

The purpose of the Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, Adult Swim and water safety courses and presentations. Water Safety instructor candidates must be at least 16 years old on or before the last scheduled day of the Water Safety Instructor course.
