Student Senate

What is Student Senate? 

Student Senate is the body of elected student representatives that is the governing student body on campus. Senate representatives are elected in the fall and plan a variety of activities throughout the year. They are responsible for actively representing the needs, concerns, and ideas of the students for which they serve. The Senate coordinates legislative activities that affect students and provide assistance to other campus organizations. 

The role of the senators is to be the primary communication link between the administration and the student community. The Senate offers an opportunity to develop leadership, civic awareness, community involvement and basic understanding of human relations. 

The Student Senate is comprised of:

  • Five Executive Officers
  • Sixteen Senators
  • One appointee from each major division
    • Engineering/Science
    • Health Science
    • Social Science
    • Business
    • Humanities 

Purpose of Student Senate: 

The purpose of this organization shall be to offer unbiased representation for the students at Rose State College regarding extracurricular matters, to act as a guiding force in aiding students in establishing new clubs and organizations to fit their particular educational and social needs, to serve as an advisory group to the Director/Assistant Director of Student Engagement or the Vice President for Student Affairs, to make appointments to College Committees, to act as a liaison between student body and administration, and to recommend expenditures for student activity funds. 

Student Senate Meetings: 

The Student Senate will hold open regular meetings on Tuesday’s at 2:00 p.m. in Student Union, room 121, while the college is in session with the exception of each semester’s final exam weeks, recognized holidays or breaks, or any time the college is closed. 

How Can I join Student Senate?

The general election of the sixteen Senators shall be held in the second week of September. The general election for Executive officers shall be held in the third week of April. Online polls will remain open online from 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday to 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. Results will be posted as soon as possible on Friday. 

Eligibility for Student Senate:

  • Executive Officers must be enrolled in at least nine credit hours at Rose State College and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all work attempted.
  • Senators must be enrolled in at least six credit hours at Rose State College and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Division Merit Appointees must be enrolled in at least six credit hours at Rose State College and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • For all first year students who have no credit hours at Rose State College, high school GPA and conduct will be used as the basis for deciding whether he/she is eligible to run for election.
