Midwest City, Okla. – The grand prize winner of the 27th annual Inventor’s Exposition, held at Rose State College, was Tobias Acree, 5th grade student at Poteau Upper School.  Tobias’s invention was the Child Seat Safety In Case of Emergency (ICE) Kit to be used with car seats. The idea came from an article his Nana read to him. It was an interview with a first responder who indicated first responders do not have important information needed to treat minors in motor vehicle crashes.  The first responder said it would be helpful if there was a way to know blood type, allergies, emergency contact information, etc. to give the best care possible.  The invention went through two designs and the final design is a car seat harness attachment with a pocket for the necessary information and a Velcro closure for ease of installation and removal.  While the product is designed for car seats, Tobias said, “It can easily be made larger to use with adult seat belts.” The reward for winning grand prize came in the form of a cool trophy, as Tobias put it, and a cash award for him and his teacher.

The Oklahoma Student Inventors Exposition began in 1988 as a brain-child of Julian Taylor (inventor and entrepreneur), Betty J.C Wright (teacher), William Enter (inventor) and Bob Rhea (patent agent). The purpose of the organization is to foster creative, inventive children who use their critical thinking skills to solve everyday problems.

While the grand prize can only go to one student inventor overall, 13 others were given accolades for winning their divisions.
