RSC Professor Dr. Nyla Ali Khan to speak at Soch: Columbia Pakistan Symposium

Midwest City, Okla. – Rose State College professor Dr. Nyla Ali Khan will speak as part of the Soch: Columbia Pakistan Symposium at Columbia University March 31, joining two other speakers to discuss Kashmir. In just it’s third year, the Soch symposium is one of the few conferences in the country to focus specifically on Pakistan, and it’s relationship with the larger South Asian community. In addition to three panel discussions, the symposium will also feature a keynote address from Shahbaz Taseer, a Pakistani entrepreneur from Lahore, Pakistan, and the son of the former governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer.

Khan will join Saiba Varma, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at UC San Diego and a visiting professor at Colgate University; and Beena Sarwar, a Pakistani journalist, writer, and filmmaker, as they discuss the various political, cultural, religious and economic impact of the Kashmir region on the surrounding areas. The panel, titled “Imagining Kashmir: Finding the Country Without a Post Office,” will be the second of three panel discussions during the one-day symposium. According to Kahn, her focus will be on nation building, conflict resolution and forging coalitions across ideological and religious divides to usher in the peace process, drawing from her latest book, “Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s Reflections on Kashmir.”

Dr. Nyla Ali Kahn is a professor at Rose State College where she teaches English Composition I and II and is also a visiting professor at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Khan is the author of four books, including “The Fiction of Nationality in an Era of Transnationalism,” and is the editor of a collection of essays on Kashmir. The granddaughter of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Khan is a noted author and speaker, focusing on Jammu and Kashmir region of India.
