Brightspace (by D2L) is an integrated learning platform that enables students to engage in online classroom and community activities through a web browser.
Through Brightspace, professors can make the syllabus, calendar, handouts, Powerpoints, links, audio and video available to students via the Internet. Students can communicate with classmates by sending email through the Classlist tool and posting class or group messages through the Discussions tool. Some instructors use the online testing capbability of Brightspace to reduce or eliminate the need for paper tests. Some instructors use the online file submission tool that allows students to submit assignments electronically without the need for printing them. In short, Brightspace has a tool that can substitute for most classroom activities.
Each student and faculty member has a Brightspace account which is protected by a username and password so each user has access to the proper groups, materials and activities with appropriate permissions. The system tracks all user activity. All classes at Rose State College have an associated Brightspace (by D2L) course site whether they are considered online or not. Many student clubs and organizations use Brightspace as well.
The maintenance window for the Brightspace server is the second Sunday of every month from approximately Midnight to 6:00 a.m. The system may be unavailable during part or all of this window, so plan accordingly.
